South Pole Traverse (SPoT1)

Where else would you get to play with big boys toys like this.

This is a cool video check it out in HD…

Each Austral summer we send several traverses on their 1000 mile journey carting over 100,000 gallons of fuel in bladders from the US Antarctic Programs McMurdo Station on Ross Island to our South Pole Station.

It takes about 40 days to get there in the most inhospitable and dangerous environment on the planet. As well as carting fuel the traverse has to take everything else required to keep the team safe and well including sleeping quarters and cooking facilities etc.

The traverse was developed over several years after a proof of concept found it more economical and potentially more reliable than airlifting fuel via LC130 Hercules aircraft.
