5 years ago today at 12:51pm Christchurch was rocked by a large earthquake that killed nearly 200 people. Since then the region has experienced over 14,000 additional shakes. The most recent large quake being on Valentine’s Day 2016.

Each dot on this interactive map represents a quake, With the most significant activity occurring from September 2010 when the Greendale fault ruptured. At the time we had no idea what was to come.

Though the rebuild is now advancing at an exciting pace and cranes across the skyline offer a parade of progress, there are still many New Zealanders in our country’s second largest city who are suffering.

More than 4500 homeowners have not settled with their insurers, a generation of children are showing signs of the stress that comes with living in broken and disrupted homes, and adult indications of mental distress, including high rates of suicide attempts, are alarming authorities.
